Ephesians Bible Study

INTRODUCTORY MATTERS

 

Author: Unknown, noted by liberal scholars, although conservative Christians believe in the infallible word of God, therefore the matter of authorship settled, Paul wrote all the Epistles. Most liberal scholars believe the author of Ephesians is anonymous not written by Paul.

Provenance: Based on Ephesians 6:20-21, Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians while in prison in Rome and seen by Tychicus, a messenger of Paul.

Date: Around A. D. 60 to 61

Audience: Saints in Ephesus addressed.

Purpose: Encouragement for the saints to adhere to a lifestyle worthy of Christianity.

Contribution:

  1. Christology: Paul affirms “God in Christ” (Read: Ephesians 4:32). Believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (Read: Ephesians 1:13).
  2. Illustrates defending the faith and overcoming the wiles of the devil by using the whole armor of God to withstand the evil day.     
  3. Shift from behavior of people outside of Christ, in contrast to behavior of saints, in Christ Jesus.

Important Consideration: The theme of the God’s work in Christ Jesus begins with Paul writing to the saints in Ephesus giving of praise to God the Father for every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
